Audience members will find out whether they can handle the truth during the Lakewood Theatre Company’s upcoming production of “A Few Good Men” from March 1 to April 7 at the Lakewood Center for the Arts.

Director Karlyn Love had aspired to direct a play at Lakewood for a while and suggested the legal drama — which turned into the 1992 motion picture featuring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. “A Few Good Men” takes place at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base as two marine officers receive court martials for the murder of a marine.

Love wanted to direct the play in large part due to playwright and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s script, adding she did not initially realize that it was a stage production before a film. She said “A Few Good Men” will immediately parachute the audience into the story and keep them intrigued by its mystery and drama.

“When I found out it was a play first, it really intrigued me. I bought the script years ago and read it. Sorkin’s dialogue is like gold. It has a musicality to it and a rhythm. He writes with such wit and there are great dramatic moments … It checks all the boxes for a really entertaining, engaging evening.”

And Love said the play isn’t just entertaining — it is thought-provoking too.

“It’s not only a courtroom drama but a rumination on what we owe ourselves and what it takes to be honorable and have integrity, especially when you’re caught up in something like the military,” she said.

Love said 100 people auditioned for the play, which features 19 actors. She said that the talent level on stage is impressive.

“I had so many great actors to choose from, which is really a gift for a director. I think I have won the directing lottery with this cast,” she said.

She also said the Lakewood Theatre Company made sure that the uniforms worn by the actors are authentic and that the set provides a foreboding sense of the looming trial.
