Spring has sprung and Earth Day is right around the corner, making now the perfect time of year to explore nature.

The Hallinan Heights Neighborhood Association is hosting a nature scavenger hunt from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 21 at Freepons Park. The event was created as a fun, sunny weather alternative to the usual park clean-up event that happened around the same time in years past.

“It’s a way to get kids out into the woods, aware of what’s around them,” said Debbie Craig, from HHNA. “They come to Freepons Woods at Freepons Park, there’s a path up through the woods and there will be people guiding where to go up into the woods. It’s nothing hard, just a nice way to introduce people to the wonderful open spaces we have around us in Lake Oswego.”

Scavenger hunt cards given to participants will feature information about the flora and fauna of Freepons Park including flowered trillium that recently bloomed along the pathway. Prizes for nature adventurers include seed pods from Dennis’ 7 Dees Nursery and ice cream gift cards from New Seasons Market.

“What am I looking forward to seeing? Kids in the woods having fun, noticing what’s around them,” said Craig.

The event is welcome to nature lovers of all ages and anyone from the Lake Oswego community.

“Our park has a wishing tree. You tie a ribbon around the tree and make a wish,” said Craig. “We’re encouraging all of our guests at the park that day to make a wish at the wishing tree.
