Lake Oswego theater performs Dolly Parton classic this spring

Fans of Dolly Parton may want to check out the Lakewood Theatre Company’s ongoing production.

The company will continue performances of “9 to 5: The Musical” through June 9 at the Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego.

The musical, which was originally a movie featuring Parton before it became a Broadway production, depicts three female coworkers who hatch a plan to exact revenge against their egotistical and sexist boss.

Dennis Corwin, the play’s director, said that he chose to direct the production because of the music and strong female characters and he thinks audiences will have a great time.

“It’s fun; it’s light-hearted. It’s a little more adult than many musicals … but from a positive side it has amazing women empowerment with some pretty complex female characters that will resonate with audiences,” he said. “The music is fantastic. It’s Dolly Parton at her finest. Almost every song is a toe-tapping, Dolly Parton anthem.”

Corwin said the chemistry between the three female leads is a key to the show and that they have a great rapport on stage. He added that the play’s crew feverishly switches set designs to show different locations like offices, homes and even a dream sequence.

“The cast of characters, they are absolutely amazing. They each bring their own talents to flesh the characters out and bring out the fully-realized person,” Corwin said.
