The Lake Grove Presbyterian Church hopes to illuminate its sanctuary through music during its upcoming spring concert.

The concert, which will culminate the Lake Grove Concert Series, is titled “Illuminaire” and will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the church sanctuary on 4040 Sunset Drive.

The concert will include performances from the 85 sanctuary volunteer singers as well as 15 chamber musicians within the Oregon Symphony.

Pieces to be performed originate from Elaine Hagenberg, Norwegian composer Ola Gjielo, Franz Joseph Haydn and Hans-André Stamm. Hagenberg’s composition is the centerpiece and will evoke a shift from darkness to light. The concert will last an hour and attendees will have a chance to greet the musicians during a reception afterward.

“We pride ourselves on creating an uplifting environment and music that inspires. Along with themes of light and restoration the atmosphere is kid-friendly and bursting at the seams of musical excellence,” concert organizer Cole Ottum said.

The concert is free but attendees can donate to the building of a school located within the Beer-Sheba project in the Thiès region of Senegal.

“This primary school cultivates a 15-year-old ecosystem, flourishing amidst Serer agricultural villages and former deforested pastures. Guided by the principles of permaculture, the project creates productive and climate-adapted agricultural systems while restoring the ecosystem and its inhabitants,” a press release from the church reads.

The church is celebrating its centennial later this year and pastor Graig Flach said such concerts introduce the church to the broader community, adding that he hopes people from Lake Oswego and the Portland metro area attend.

“As a pastor, I love it when the doors are open to people from across the community. It seems like the concert creates a safe space for people to come in, break down the barriers and discover the church as a place for beauty and welcome,” he said.
