Becky Grosse thinks quality coffee is akin to a fine wine. Like wine, growing and roasting coffee involves a multidimensional process and produces complex flavors. She hopes people who walk into her new Roseline Coffee location in Lake Grove not only enjoy the experience but learn something in the process.

“If they walk away learning something new, we have done our job. It’s like wine tasting,” she said, adding: “We want people to walk out of here wanting to come back and saying ‘That was an excellent beverage.’”

Roseline Coffee opened its fifth location at 16398 Boones Ferry Road in late April. The shop started in 2012 and Grosse said a group purchased the brand last year. She said the business had been more focused on roasting coffee and selling it wholesale, but has recently turned its eye to retail operations. Roseline opened three locations last year and two so far this year. Grosse said the owner of the building next to the Zupan’s market in Lake Grove also owns a building that houses one of Roseline’s other spaces. The Lake Oswego space had been previously occupied by Starbucks but was dormant for years.

“I’ve always wanted to expand out of Portland, but I was just trying to find the right fit for our brand,” Grosse said, adding that she had heard from many Lake Oswego residents asking her to open up shop in town.

Grosse said the company sources coffee from high-elevation areas in Columbia, Honduras, Ethiopia and Kenya.

“The high elevation produces a very flavorful cherry. You get the flavor and the nuances that you don’t get purchasing coffee from low-elevation parts of the world. And the job as a roaster is to make the coffee shine to the best of their ability. We are quality-control oriented,” Grosse said, adding that roasters taste test the coffee daily.

Grosse also wanted people to have a pleasant experience at the shop, adding Roseline has tried to implement a design that is distinct and inviting. The coffee shop has food options like breakfast burritos, ham and cheese toasties and pizza sandwiches as well as specialty drinks. For more information visit https://roselinecoffeepdx.square.site/.

“We’re so excited to be in the community. We have had a good, organic opening. Everyone has been lovely and welcoming,” Grosse said.
