The city of Lake Oswego is extending hours at the Lake Oswego Public Library so it can serve as a cooling center while temperatures hover around 100 F this weekend.

City Manager Martha Bennett said via email that the library would be open until 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, Saturday, July 6, Sunday, July 7 and Monday, July 8.

Library services will not be available during the cooling center hours (which are from 5-8 p.m. July 5-7 and 7-8 p.m. July 8), Bennett noted. However, visitors will have access to materials.

“Air conditioning, chilled water and restrooms will be available. Please note that pets are not allowed in the library; service animals are welcome,” Bennett said.

The library will offer normal services during regular hours.

The National Weather Service has an excessive heat advisory in effect for portions of northwest and west central Oregon and southwest Washington from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7.

The weather service advised people to stay in air-conditioned rooms, drink ample fluids, check on relatives and neighbors, stay out of the sun when possible, not to leave pets or young children unattended in vehicles, limit strenuous activities to early mornings and late evenings and wear light and loose-fitting clothing, among other recommendations.
