Whether you have trees in your yard or are just curious to learn about tree species and maintaining the community’s canopy, you may be interested in a series of upcoming events hosted by the city of Lake Oswego.
The city is hosting a tree species identification event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at George Rogers Park. This event will include a walking tour of the park’s tree habitat provided by Certified Master Arborist Todd Prager.
Next, the city will present a deep dive into its tree removal application process and code specifications from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at City Hall. It will go over tree protection plans and tree code violations related to development from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at City Hall.
Finally, the city will host a tree pruning workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Foothills Park Pavillion and a workshop for creating a backyard habitat from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Tryon Creek State Natural Area Classroom, (11321 SW Terwilliger Boulevard).
Contracted city arborist Morgan Holen said the tree specification event is always fun and well attended, adding that the tree pruning event will include live demonstrations and that the final event is designed to raise awareness about the Backyard Habitat Certification Program (which “provides tools, resources, and recognition for gardening sustainably and creating wildlife habitat,” according to its website).
“We try to do new and relevant topics and bring back topics people seem to really enjoy,” Holen said, later adding: “I would encourage people to sign up for any of the workshops that sound interesting to them.”
The workshops require registration beforehand. For more information, visit https://www.ci.oswego.or.us/planning/workshop-series.
