A poll conducted on behalf of the Lake Oswego School District by Patinkin Research Strategies shows what Lake Oswego voters think about a future capital construction bond.

Four-hundred registered and “likely” voters living within LOSD were surveyed, with the goal being to reflect a demographic snapshot of the May 2025 electorate.

The poll began by surveying the general sentiment about the condition of the district’s facilities. Fifty percent of those polled ranked the facilities as “poor” or “only fair” and 21% said “excellent” or “good.”

Polling results about specific projects were organized into three tiers based on favorability. For each potential project or improvement area, voters stated whether they were in favor or opposed.

Patinkin provided percentages for “net favor” and “net oppose,” with the remaining share representing respondents who weren’t sure or did not choose to answer.

“The top tier of bond projects tested in the survey focus on the basics: including needed repairs, updates that improve school safety and/or security, and technology improvements,” the poll said.

The most popular of all polled areas, which had 58% favorability, was to “conduct needed replacement and repair work on aging roofs, siding, and floor coverings.”

These facility improvements, often referred to as the “safe, warm and dry” priorities, included modernizing fire safety systems (57% approval), eliminating health hazards like asbestos (56%) and updating critical technology infrastructure (55%).

The second tier of polled areas included larger construction projects, such as replacement facilities for the current Lake Grove and Forest Hills elementary schools.

Replacing Lake Grove Elementary saw 53% favorability and 22% opposition, while Forest Hills received 53% favorability and 25% opposition.

The proposal to, “Expand access to career and technical education and STEM programs at both high schools by building new flexible spaces that can be used by multiple programs including robotics,” received 53% positive responses.

Upgrades to athletic facilities received 53% favorable responses. The three lowest-rated projects for the second tier were the consolidation of administrative services (52%), extended learning areas for language immersion programs (52%) and hybrid commons to replace cafeterias or gymnasiums in elementary schools (51%).

The proposal that received the lowest favorability was to close Lake Grove, move the school to Uplands and lease the property to developers. This idea was met with 44% approval and 33% opposition, with the remaining voters unsure.

During a Monday, Sept. 23 meeting of the Lake Oswego School Board, the district indicated that it would conduct future polls after the Bond Development Committee is formed and an actual capital construction bond package begins to take shape.
