United States because a recent study by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion think tank, recently released data showing that of 11,930 abortions provided within Oregon hospitals and clinics in 2023, about one in 10 were for out-of-state patients, including an estimated 400...

Pollinators are an important part of gardens
A thriving backyard garden requires homeowners to take steps to ensure the garden has the best environment in which to grow and thrive. The right tools and components, including trowels, rakes, soil, amendments, and fertilizer, can help gardeners create beautiful spaces. It’s also important that pollinators feel welcome in the garden. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that one-third of all agricultural output depends on pollinators. The USDA notes...

They are such a powerful reflection on how we are doing in those arenas,” he said. As the new executive director of Willamette Riverkeeper — which works to protect and restore the...

Over the Fence: Growing old with Mick
Here’s a recent headline from the news: “Mick Jagger, front man for the Rolling Stones, turns 80.” Wait — what? That can’t be right, can it? Yes, it can. It most shockingly, alarmingly and astoundingly can. If I mention that I’m growing old with Mick, some of you who follow my newsletter may think I’m referring to my cat “Mick Jagger.” He co-writes my letter, Cat-tankerous Literary News, and is full of information (along with other things too dastardly to mention.) ...

For Oregonians awaiting two momentous rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court … well, as of Wednesday, June 26, they’re still waiting. With only a week left in its session, the high court on Wednesday sided with President Biden, rejecting efforts by some to limit White House pressure on social media firms regarding the flagging of disinformation. But the two most closely watched cases from an Oregon perspective didn’t get handed...
2024 Maybach GLS 600 is over the top luxury
In the world of luxury SUVs, there are very few that can compete with the Maybach GLS. The Bentley Bentayga and Rolls Royce Cullinan are really about the only SUVs that deliver comparable features. The Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus are more sport-oriented. Before we get too far in, a little explanation is in order. COLUMN | Milkweed + Honey: Lessons from my dad
It should surprise no one that this columnist became interested in gardening. It runs in the family. From my earliest memories, my dad, Bernie Schell, heaved on his big steel-toed boots every morning and came home filthy every evening from working in the dirt all day. Dad worked in landscaping in the high desert area of Twin Falls, Idaho, for four decades. He started at a golf course and then worked for a garden center before becoming self-employed. ...
