Kia EV9 is a great SUV, if you can afford it
The price of electric vehicles is a huge sticking point with many consumers. At this time, the cost of batteries required to deliver the driving range that consumers demand is placing substantial upward pressure on prices. Automakers cannot afford to take a loss on every EV they sell, so the costs are passed on to the consumer. Part of the cost equation is that Americans love their big SUVs, and with good reason. We like to be able to carry people and cargo, and maybe...
Jottings From Fifth & G: Why does granny drive so slowly?
Have you heard it said, “Why do those old people drive so slowly?” Well, speaking as an old person, my response is, “Most of us drive the speed limit! And it is not just old people; it is those who care about the safety of others and, hence, want to abide by the law”. Drivers abide by the law for good reasons. They do not want to: harm others, chance a traffic ticket that might increase their insurance rates or lose their driver’s license. Last,...

The council recently restored a painting from 1893 and is now displaying it at the Oswego Heritage House on 10th Street. “We are excited to get people to see the...
Supreme Court justices appear split over Idaho case regarding abortion care during emergencies
U.S. Supreme Court justices spent two hours Wednesday, April 24, debating whether a federal law about emergency treatment encompasses abortion care even in states with strict abortion bans, with no clear indication of how they may ultimately rule. A decision could come as soon as the end of June to decide whether Idaho’s near-total abortion ban means doctors who might need to terminate a pregnancy during a health emergency would be protected from prosecution under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, or EMTALA, a...

The National Fire Protection Association says they can contribute to 440 deaths and $1.3 billion in direct property damage annually. Older homes...

OPINION: A matter of trust between citizens, city of Lake Oswego when it comes to park protection
As the Lake Oswego community celebrates Earth Day, we also celebrate the passage of the voter-ratified city charter land use regulations that ensure all development within 15 nature preserves is consistent with preserving them as natural areas available for public enjoyment. Chapter X protects nature preserves by moving authority for all development not explicitly allowed into the custody of voters. Simply put: The City of Lake Oswego must seek voter approval. We are not alone: West Linn, Tualatin and Oregon City also have charter-protected parks. ...

Oregon senators split on aid to Israel
Month after month, year after year, Oregon’s two U.S. senators often vote in lockstep. The senior senator, Ron Wyden, and junior senator, Jeff Merkley, are liberal Portland Democrats who see much of the world through the same lenses. Then came Tuesday, April 23, and a $95 billion foreign aid bill that offers a pastiche of long-delayed goals: Aid to Ukraine and Taiwan; banning or modifying ownership of TikTok; addressing the importation of fentanyl and precursor drugs; $9 billion in humanitarian aid for those in the...
