Lake Oswego resident becomes owner at Joseph Hughes Construction
Portland-based Joseph Hughes Construction (JHC), founded in 1981, announced a significant leadership transition in January. Founder Joe Hughes has taken a step back from the day-to-day management of his company and has announced the promotion of long-time employee, owner and current Vice-President Tom Rue to president. Additionally, JHC’s current chief financial officer, Taylor Schmitz, will become an owner and join Rue in Joseph Hughes Construction’s new leadership team. Schmitz is a second-generation Lake Oswego resident active in the community with children attending the Lake Oswego School District and playing in various Lake Oswego sports programs. Schmitz’s father, Doug Schmitz, served as the Lake Oswego city manager from 1992-2007 spearheading many notable projects such as revitalizing the downtown through developments including Millennium Park and Foothills Park.
Buying rural or urban? Know the differences
The decision to move is a personal choice typically reached after considering several variables. Career opportunities, a better climate, superior schools, or a desire to be closer to family compel millions of people to move each year, and those factors underscore how unique each move can be. Steinway Moving & Storage contends that the average American moves 11.7 times, while the Canadian Association of Movers says Canadians move an average...

How will major changes to real estate regulations affect the Lake Oswego industry?
Will a settlement agreement between the National Association of Realtors and home-sellers precipitate sweeping changes to the industry or cause more modest adjustments? After a Missouri court ruled last year that the NAR, Keller Williams Realty and Homeservices of America were liable for $1.8 billion in damages for conspiring to inflate commissions, the entities committed to changing their practices according to a CNN article. These groups decided to settle the case for $418 million earlier this month rather than appeal it to a higher court...
Starting a conversation: Clackamas County hosts webinar on preventing underage substance abuse
Start by listening and then find teachable moments. Through communication and information, underage drinking can be prevented. These were two of the key points shared on Monday, March 18, when the Clackamas County Health, Housing and Human Services Department hosted the webinar, “Prevent Underage Drinking. Talk. They Hear You.” The department invited three guests to speak during the webinar and answer questions afterward: Dr. Marvin Seppala, former chief medical officer...
Aston Martin's DBX SUV goes over the top in any weather
One of the things about traveling in winter is that you never know what kind of weather you'll get when you arrive back in Portland. As it happened, I flew in at about dusk a few weeks ago, right into one of our early March snowstorms. I was a little worried about that, as I was picking up the very expensive and powerful Aston Martin DBX707. This SUV costs over $250,000, and I really didn't want to be the person who stuffed it into a ditch. However, my route home took me over Highway 6 to Tillamook, so I had...
Jottings From Fifth & G: The gift of friendship
In 1984, our friend Walt decided to take early retirement after working 40 years at the John Deere Company in Waterloo, Iowa. My husband Harold and I had been friends with Walt and his wife Jean since 1958 when we became across-the-street neighbors. And we continued this close relationship through their three moves to other neighborhoods in Waterloo. Because of our 26-year friendship, we wanted to give Walt a memento to celebrate his retirement but were in a quandary as to what that could be....

How to find the right real estate agent
Working with a real estate agent can give both buyers and sellers an edge in what continues to be a challenging real estate market. Agents, brokers and Realtors are professionals with distinct expertise and knowledge of buying and selling homes. That expertise is evidenced by how many people rely on real estate professionals yearly. A 2022 Zillow Group Consumer Housing Trends report found that 88% of homeowners choose to list their homes with a real estate agent when it comes time to sell. ...

Advocates react as Oregon unveils abortion-information website
The state of Oregon unveiled an abortion-information website on Tuesday, March 27, drawing reactions from activists on both sides of the divisive topic. The timing wasn’t lost on anybody: the Oregon Health Authority’s Reproductive Health Program launched the new website — which is designed to make it easier for people to seek abortion care information and services in Oregon — on the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that seeks to limit access to mifepristone, a medication used...
OPINION: New library branch in Lake Grove is right approach
New library branch in Lake Grove is right approach I was pleased to read that the city of Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego School District are in conversation about the possibility of repurposing Lake Grove Elementary School to include a branch library for residents of the west side of town (https://www.lakeoswegoreview.com/news/lake-oswego-school-district-weighs-the-future-of-lake-grove-elementary-property/article_84567888-e314-11ee-b499-7f43ef39975b.html). I hope that these negotiations are successful and, if so, talk of relocating our current library will be set aside. Our existing library is part of a cluster of civic assets on the...
