Oregon Legislature invests $30 million in summer learning programs
Oregon lawmakers made a $30 million investment in Oregon’s public school students with the passage of House Bill 4082 on Tuesday, March 5. OPINION: Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer must be replaced
Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer must be replaced I am writing today to express my extreme disappointment with my Federal Congressional Representative. Representative Chavez-DeRemer’s voting record this term on environmental issues important to me and her constituents. She has voted against the EPA Cleaner Automobile and Truck Standards Act, voted for limiting climate change emissions reporting, and for HR 4821 which cuts spending on environmental protection agencies and the Department of the Interior. She voted to cut limits on soot pollution which disproportionately affects children of color....
Lake Oswego charter amendment is a land use regulation, Clackamas County judge says
Contrary to the city of Lake Oswego’s assertions, a Clackamas County Circuit Court judge issued a ruling Wednesday, March 6 stating that Chapter X — a charter amendment approved by voters that limits alterations to local parks — is a land use regulation and is therefore relevant to a current appeals process over a proposed sewer line extension into West Waluga Park. Judge Michael Wetzel issued the ruling after New Look Development — which applied with the city for a nearby lot adjustment in an...
Jottings From Fifth & G: It's a long way ... or maybe not!
A soft but lilting tune penetrated my morning slumber. Rousing, as I often did, to my mother’s beautiful soprano voice, I heard her whisper “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” Though usually slow to rise, especially on chilly March mornings, this morn found me eagerly throwing back the covers and heading for the kitchen where Irish soda bread would be waiting. In our home St. Patrick’s Day was rivaled only by Christmas and Easter and celebrated with great respect for the saint who expelled snakes from Ireland and brought Christianity to the Gaelic clans. ...
Recreational immunity bill approved by Oregon Legislature
Representatives of local governments worried about their liability when it comes to managing improved recreational trails can breathe a sigh of relief. The Oregon Legislature approved Senate Bill 1576, which temporarily protects local jurisdictions and other owners of recreational trails from liability. The bill will sunset at the end of 2025 and elected officials have said there will be a deeper look at the law in the meantime. Last year, a ruling in Nicole Fields v. the City of Newport complicated liability protections for local governments and landowners of improved trails, leading insurance provider CIS Oregon to recommend that cities close recreational trails. Scott Winkels, with the League of Oregon Cities, testified last month that he expected CIS to rescind that recommendation if the bill passes. The House voted 25-2 to approve the bill and the Senate unanimously approved it.

Lake Oswego music school hoping to bounce back from winter storm damage
School of Rock owners Jon and Kathy Graf have helped Lake Oswego area students discover a love for music and a penchant for performance since opening the music school over 10 years ago. The January winter storm complicated that mission. With power out overnight Monday, Jan. 15, pipes broke, leading to significant water damage in the studio on 11830 Kerr Parkway. This setback forced the Grafs to continue their mission in an alternative format as they searched for a new space. ...

4 quality-of-life amenities to look for when house hunting
(StatePoint) — Curb appeal is important, but it’s not the be-all and end-all of house hunting. By factoring in other priorities, such as great schools, a community feel, and nearby amenities that improve your quality of life, you can feel right at home in your new neighborhood from the moment you arrive. “Many families want it all — the connection that comes with a small town feel and the bustle and energy of shopping, dining, and culture,” says Blake Gable, CEO of Barron Collier Companies,...
It’s become standard for lawmakers to say Oregon will stay on standard time, but not this time
Daylight saving will continue to see the light of day. There is not enough time for the legislative measure that could have ended daylight saving time in Oregon to become law this legislative session. Earlier this week, Senate Bill 1548, the measure that would have put Oregon on permanent standard time, narrowly passed the state Senate. But on Tuesday, March 5, Democratic House Speaker Daniel Rayfield’s office confirmed the bill was dead for this session. Oregon Public Broadcasting is a news partner of the Pamplin Media Group.
