Q&A: The latest on Oregon’s race to improve reading
Oregon’s effort to overhaul reading instruction is reaching a critical point as educators await allocations and final guidelines from the state. Last year, Oregon launched its new vision for how to teach the state’s youngest learners to read and write. The Early Literacy Success Initiative reoriented efforts around research-backed approaches to reading, bolstered by the passing of House Bill 3198, which allocated more than $100 million to the cause. Oregon Public Broadcasting, a news partner of the Pamplin Media Group, conducted a Q&A with Angelica Cruz, the state’s first director of literacy, who began the role last fall, and Jennifer Patterson, the assistant superintendent for the Office of Teaching, Learning and Assessment at the Oregon Department of Education, to learn more about where the initiative is now and what to expect moving forward.

Lake Oswego police arrest another subject related to human trafficking at local spa
The Lake Oswego Police Department arrested an additional subject in an investigation that found Flora Spa at 15630 Boones Ferry Road may have been acting as a front for human trafficking. The investigation identified at least 10 women compelled to work at the spa who police believe are victims of human sex trafficking. Investigators suspect that the spa and some of its affiliates were involved in a trafficking operation that spread beyond Oregon. The department had already arrested two subjects and announced Tuesday that it had arrested a third, 46-year-old Portland resident Zewu Hu. The police conducted a search warrant and arrested Hu on a charge of promoting prostitution. Hu is being lodged at Clackamas County jail. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can call 503-635-0232 or submit an anonymous tip at https://www.ci.oswego.or.us/FormsLF/mNNS3?Case=23-4858.

During a policy meeting on Feb. 6, Clackamas County commissioners unanimously approved a statement for the Oregon Legislature imploring state lawmakers to reprioritize adding a third lane on Interstate 205 between the Abernethy Bridge and Stafford Road. Commissioners said that the third lane would reduce diversion onto neighborhood streets, decrease crashes, complete essential seismic upgrades, reduce congestion and emissions, provide more reliable travel times, keep people and goods moving, and prepare for expected growth. ...
Why Your Dentist Refers You to a Specialist
General dentists play a crucial role in maintaining oral health by offering a range of services, from routine cleanings to basic restorative procedures. However, there are instances when a general dentist may refer a patient to a specialist. This referral process ensures that individuals receive the most specialized and advanced care for specific dental issues. One primary reason for referrals is the complexity of certain cases. General dentists are skilled in handling common dental issues, but they may lack the expertise needed for complex procedures or conditions. Specialists, on the other hand, have undergone additional training in specific areas such as...
Understanding Inappropriate Urination in Cats
Inappropriate urination in cats can be a concerning issue for pet owners. Cats are known for their cleanliness, so when they start to urinate outside of their litterbox, it could be a sign of an underlying issue. Inappropriate urination, also known as feline inappropriate elimination, is one of the most common behavioral complaints with cat owners. This can include urination outside of the litterbox—on carpets, furniture, or other household surfaces—or changes in urination habit, such as frequency, volume, or any straining or vocalization while urinating. ...
Recognizing Foreign Body Ingestion in Pets
Our furry friends can sometimes have a habit of getting into things they’re not supposed to, and in the worst-case scenarios, the ingestion of foreign bodies can cause serious problems for our pets. Both dogs and cats are notorious for swallowing objects they shouldn’t. Dogs, in particular, may swallow small objects such as toys, rubber balls, or household items (coins, buttons, or jewelry), as well as bones, clothing, or fabric. Cats, meanwhile, are often attracted to string-like objects such as dental floss, thread, or yarn, as well as some household plants, which can be toxic. ...
