‘A beautiful thing:’ How three Lakeridge students started a nonprofit that gives the gift of music
In elementary school music classes across the United States, students are given a recorder, a simple hand flute with a whistle mouthpiece, and taught the basics of music. For many students, learning an instrument is the first step in their arts education. But what if a student doesn’t have access to an instrument? This is the challenge that three Lakeridge High School juniors sought to remedy by starting the nonprofit...
Clackamas County residents hope to give Oregonians a say in whether they are tolled
As the Oregon Department of Transportation plans to toll I-205 and I-5 beginning in 2026, a group of Clackamas County residents is hoping to stop the agency in its tracks. The Vote Before Tolls initiative, which organizers are hoping to place on Oregon ballots in November, would amend the Oregon Constitution to require a majority of residents of counties within 15 miles of any road to be tolled within the state to approve of the toll in a certified election. As written, the ballot initiative...

Jottings From Fifth & G: Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue
One November Saturday I headed out at 3:30 for Safeway. My grocery list was small, but necessary: romaine lettuce for Rusty, my canary, Tylenol and nose strips for a deviated septum. I found a handicapped parking place near the entrance and clumsily rounded up my purse, cane and two brown bags. That’s when I think I was spotted by three perpetrators — a white haired senior with a cane, a purse and two brown grocery bags, walking with caution. I headed to the wine aisle,...
Portland metro area: Free rides Sunday in honor of Rosa Parks
TriMet, the Portland-area’s regional transit agency, will not collect fare on Sunday, Feb. 4, in honor of Rosa Parks, on what would have been her 111th birthday. The free-ride day includes all TriMet buses, MAX trains and LIFT paratransit vehicles. The transit agency released a statement: “On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks changed the course of history when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her act of defiance and resulting arrest sparked protests from the streets of Montgomery that inspired change across the United States. Rosa Parks’ brave act became a cornerstone of the civil rights movement and the catalyst for a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court affirming transportation equity as a civil right.” Partner transit agencies at the Portland Streetcar and C-TRAN will join TriMet for the annual tribute to Rosa Parks.

Movie Review: “The Thomas Crown Affair” showing Feb.7 and 10 on Cinemax
Many movie remakes prompt the question of why they were even attempted. In the case of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” though, the result is surprisingly good. Originally filmed in a 1968 version with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway as romantically entangled adversaries in a heist investigation, the story was updated in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo as the amorous opponents. Produced by Brosnan’s company and directed by John McTiernan (“Die Hard”), the revision – which Cinemax shows Wednesday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb....
