Clackamas County homeless service providers lobby congresswoman for funding
Funding requests for Congress poured in from all sides at a Clackamas County center that provides meals, laundry and showers and helps connect homeless people to other services. Clackamas County's congressional representative promised to fight for all the requests, including more beds for mental health crises, community development block grants and family child care. As previously reported by Oregon Capital Chronicle, U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer left a Jan. 25 discussion...

Oregon signs up for summer food program for kids but needs Legislature to commit funds
State officials have signed up for a three-month summer food program that would benefit nearly 300,000 children in Oregon. The program would work much like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, by giving eligible families debit cards to buy groceries. A total of $40 would be given to each eligible child from a low-income family during the summer, when they’re not eating free meals in schools. There’s just one...
Wichita Center to 'remain a public service' despite Clackamas County's termination
Clackamas County officials recently sent notice to the North Clackamas School District that NCSD’s social services building would no longer be able to operate through an agreement with the county. County officials blindsided both NCSD and the county’s parks advisory board in exercising its right to terminate the agreement with 180 days’ notice. Wichita Center houses a food pantry, clothing closet, toiletry essentials, and access to a variety of partner agencies serving youth and families. ...

A battery backup or generator?” The board was in the middle of an update from Tony Vandenberg, the district’s executive director of project management, as he addressed the damage and ongoing repairs at numerous schools in Lake Oswego after the recent winter storm. ...

Major rains to arrive Friday, Jan. 26, in Portland area; more trees could come down
The highly anticipated atmospheric river brings soaking rains and warmer temperatures to the Portland area Friday, Jan. 26. This latest atmospheric river comes just a week after much of western Oregon and Washington experienced a harsh blast of winter weather. Last week’s wind and ice has left many trees vulnerable to the impact of heavy rains over an already saturated landscape. Leaning trees could fall victim to added rain, which could soften the soil around them. KOIN 6 News is a partner of the Pamplin Media Group. Find the original story here.

Watersheds are our lifeblood. And the health of our watersheds is directly related to how we conduct our lives. The shape of a watershed is universal. It is seen in the internal plumbing and wiring of every living organism on Earth. A graphic example of river watersheds is shown in this map of the Columbia River basin. Knowing that all things eventually flow to the sea should inspire us to...
