Jottings From Fifth & G: The trip not taken
The audience in the packed Opera House was unusually still during the overture that night, waiting, quiet. Finally the curtains opened for the first act of Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera” — the masked ball. The heavyset man walked slowly onto the stage, a white handkerchief waving in his hand. The audience erupted into relieved and thunderous applause that went on for minutes … this time he hadn’t canceled, as he had several times before, and now he really was here. Pavarotti had finally made it to Chicago. As he began to sing, the words “liquid gold” came to my...

Lake Oswego restaurants, employees face setbacks due to storm
Local Lake Oswego establishments endured a damaging week during the winter storm that began Jan. 13, as blustery winds and icy roads caused closures and reduced business. Further, many had to throw away products and replenish. ...
OPINION: How changes to property taxes could help incentivize building housing
A lot has been said about what needs to happen to incentivize the construction of new housing in Oregon, but less has been said about the fact that adjustments to existing systems and policies can incentivize new construction without over relying on financial subsidies, land grabs or a loss of environmental protections. One way Oregon can incentivize housing construction is by reforming our property tax structure. Consider your property tax bill. Currently, property taxes are assessed on two components of a property: the underlying land...

Outer Southwest Portland was hit surprisingly hard by the winter storm that first struck the region with an arctic blast on Saturday, Jan. 13. That is where Portland Public Schools scrambled to relocate nearly 900 students displaced from two heavily-damaged schools that may not reopen until mid-February. Robert Gray Middle School, 5505 S.W. 23rd Ave., had 10 breaks in water lines due to power outages and freezing temperatures, along with...

Members of a joint House-Senate committee released a proposal and talked to...
COLUMN: Milkweed + Honey: A gooseberry by any other name
Last spring, I planted gooseberries, but I harvested ground cherries. If you’ve been gardening or otherwise working with plants for any amount of time, you’ve probably encountered a similar conundrum. The problem isn’t so much “you say potato, I say potato” as it is “you say strawberry tomatoes, I say husk cherries.” Common names for plants can be profuse and contradictory. By “gooseberry,” I mean Physalis peruviana, a nightshade closely...

Managing severe winter weather in your car
Snow and ice have always been a regular occurrence in Portland winters, but somehow we never seem to be truly prepared when the weather turns cold. That’s really not too surprising, because even though frozen weather is a regular visitor, it’s also just a few days each year. When there’s ice, snow, slush, or freezing rain on the road, the best answer is to avoid driving at all. However, few of us have that luxury. If you are one of the majority of Portlanders who...
