Former Oregon women's basketball star Oti Gildon is back and equipped with an eye for chemistry
Holdovers from Oregon women’s basketball’s three-year run of brilliance, a string of 30-plus-win seasons spanning from 2017 to 2020, are scarce. The onset of Covid-19 halted a potential Ducks’ title run in 2020, with it, ending the program’s historical climax. Head coach Kelly Graves still mans the ship, but the core of those teams have long-since moved on, spurring pro career’s, graduating, transferring. Oti Gildon, a key role player in...
Metro weighs using supportive housing tax to build apartments
Metro officials are weighing next steps in responding to the region’s housing needs, which could mean redirecting some funds from Metro’s Supportive Housing Services measure to building more affordable housing. The SHS measure, which was approved by voters in 2020, has brought in far more annual revenue than initially anticipated. The measure sunsets after 10 years, so Metro will make its final tax collections in 2031. Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas...
Why did so many trees fall in Lake Oswego? Arborists discuss the unique qualities of windstorm
Arborists responding to a bevy of calls in the Lake Oswego community have noticed a trend amongst the trees they are removing: many of them are Douglas firs. Ironically, Douglas firs fared well in the ice storm of 2021 that caused huge tree damage in certain parts of the Portland metro area, whereas many oaks fell during that event. Oaks, oppositely, did OK in this storm. Arborist Brian French said...
Mayor Joe Buck: Time for Lake Oswego to come together and rebuild after devastating storm
Editor’s note: This message from Mayor Joe Buck initially appeared in the “LO Down” newsletter and is reprinted with his permission. Neighbors, as we move from processing the debilitating impacts of the storm into active community and personal recovery, I want to acknowledge the utter exhaustion and weight so many of us feel. A neighbor lost his life, people experienced the loss of their homes and are displaced long term as they scramble to plan and rebuild their lives. Others face immense property damage, some...
‘Amazingly dedicated’: Lake Oswego Public Works team goes above and beyond to serve community during storm
The Lake Oswego Public Works team, City Engineer Erica Rooney said, is set up to handle extreme weather events that last one-to-three days. With the latest, violent iteration lasting at least seven, the staff have had to work above and beyond regular protocols. The team consistently put in 12-hour shifts just trying to respond to an endless stream of emergencies and disaster mitigation last week. They had a maximum of 10 people on each shift trying to manage the entire community, and by Friday everyone...
'It was close — really close': Lake Oswego residents share experiences with trees falling during winter storm
Caroline McGrath wishes all her fellow Lake Oswego residents who were displaced and had their homes damaged due to the recent violent windstorm could get together for a big group hug. With violent winds swirling over 50 mph, likely over 100 trees in Lake Oswego fell onto streets and homes and parks in the community and thousands of residents were without power for days. More gravely, one resident was killed while many others who narrowly escaped the worst face displacement and a long road back...

2024 Kia Telluride is a proven winner
There's a reason why Kia dealers and staff refer to the Telluride midsize SUV as the "Sell-You-Ride." The same reason is why this is one of the most popular SUVs on the market. This three-row SUV is a home run for Kia, as the comparable Palisade is for Kia's sister brand, Hyundai. Starting from the outside, the Telluride is a good-looking SUV. It's masculine without being ridiculously macho like so many SUVs are today. Rather, it recalls the glory days of the Jeep Grand Cherokee,...
Oregon task force focus for Legislature: beer and wine taxes, plus alcohol addiction
A longtime proponent of taxes on beer and wine is now in charge of a state task force studying the public health impacts of alcohol abuse and whether to raise alcohol taxes for addiction treatment. Rep. Tawna Sanchez, D-Portland, was elected chair of the state’s new Alcohol Pricing and Addiction Services task force in its first meeting two weeks ago. The 20-person board is made up of state lawmakers, public health experts and representatives of Oregon’s beer, wine and cider industries. The task force is...

Jottings From Fifth & G: Reflecting on unfinished projects
With the new year comes looking forward and also looking back at the past year — the fun times, the sad times and the unfinished projects I never completed: like the sequel to my novel I intended to write, the poem I never finished, the painting never completed. The ideas for these projects are written down on scraps of paper with lists of “to dos.” Those projects hang there. Like autumn leaves about to fall from the trees, like a thread of connection to memory, waiting to be finished and put away before they fall forever from recognizable form. They...
