What to know about reseeding or replanting your lawn
Spring marks the return of flowering plants and warm weather. And homeowners know that spring also ushers in the return of home renovation season. Homeowners undoubtedly have an extensive list of projects on their to-do list this spring, and that may include helping their lawns and gardens recover after a long winter. However, homeowners can consider these...
Advocate: Next goal is containing cost of health care
Oregon has done well to expand health care coverage over three decades, a former leader of the state health agency says. But Dr. Bruce Goldberg also said that Oregon can do more to improve those services for low-income and older people — and to restrain their annual growth in cost. He said Oregon has done so with its network of coordinated-care organizations that serve one million recipients under the Oregon Health Plan — and the state needs to expand their approach. ...
U.S. health care costs still higher than rest of the world
According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the United States spent 17.3% ($4.5 trillion) of its gross domestic product on health care costs in 2022. Among the contributing factors: High salaries for specialized physicians and the high cost of medicines, plus administrative costs. That figure has receded to the 17.5% level in 2019. It had been 19.5% in 2020 and 18.2% in 2021. But if left unchecked, that figure is projected to reach 20% by 2031. By a different measure, per-capita health care costs in the United States were $12,555 in 2022, far above other advanced nations. Switzerland and Germany, the next two in line, hovered around $8,000 each, followed by other nations. But the medical outcomes in the United States are not better than in most advanced nations. — Peter Wong

MISTO SCHNEIDER-ANTHONY
Misto was with us for 12 years. His adoption papers said he was found in a field in Merced, landed in our loving home, and gave us so much happiness. He seemed to have a little clock inside and knew precisely when he was to go on a walk. Our favorite time was sitting close together on the couch in the evenings. His little bark saved us from FedEx drop-offs, school bus departures, and countless innocent people who would walk by the window. He greeted us even after just an hour away, and you would think we had been gone for days; it was pure joy to see his excitement. We felt the same. We took him on road trips and several airline trips to Michigan, where he could roam around attempting to chase squirrels. He loved being on the water and would stand like a crew chief at the end of the kayak. He left us the unforgettable joy of spending time with such a sweet little dog. He will remain our little friend forever. Love Love

Although Jake Sweeting has assumed a new role at Harmony Academy since last year’s graduation, the assistant principal can still dish out dad jokes like he did when he was a teacher. “I want to start with a quote from my late grandfather and that's: ‘Never lose your sense of humor,’” Sweeting said. “That being said: ‘Why did the teacher wear sunglasses to class? Because the students are so bright.’” ...

EV Roundup: We drive and compare new EVs
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to drive several new electric vehicles on the same day as part of the Midwest Automotive Media Association's Spring Rally. It was a useful chance to compare and contrast EVs from several different automakers to see what each has to offer. I started with the all-new Volvo EX30, which is due at dealers later this year and currently available for reservation. The Volvo is a four-door hatchback starting at about $35,000. It will have about 268 horsepower...

State economist reflects on 14 years on the job
For Mark McMullen, who just wrapped up more than 13 years as Oregon’s state economist, coming to Oregon was both difficult and easy. The hard part was his career path after he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pomona College and a master’s degree in public economics from the University of Pennsylvania. His first job was as a researcher for the Congressional Budget Office, which Congress created almost two decades earlier to provide information and analyses independent of the White House Office of Management...
My opinion: Oregon may be putting patients in the middle of bad policy
In 2021 the Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 844, creating the Oregon Prescription Drug Affordability Board (Oregon PDAB). Today, the board is charged with annually identifying nine drugs and one insulin product that it determines may create affordability challenges for the Oregon health care systems or high out-of-pocket costs for Oregonians. It is also charged with developing a mechanism for establishing upper payment limits on those drugs it has reviewed. Oregon Bioscience Association — along with the voices of many patient groups and health leaders...

Keeping Your Pet Safe from Insect Bites and Stings
