Lake Oswego lays out rules for electric bicycles amid usage increase
The city of Lake Oswego is seeing an uptick in the use of electric bicycles and reminded the community about rules and regulations in a press release. “E-bikes provide a fun and efficient mode of transportation, but it’s crucial for riders to stay safe and follow the rules of the road,” the press release stated. These rules include needing to be at least 16 years old to operate one, not riding on sidewalks and using a bike lane if one is nearby. Further, a-bike riders must have lighting if visibility is limited, but are not required to wear a helmet (though doing so is recommended). For more information on e-bike rules, visit https://www.oregon.gov/odot/forms/dmv/6619.pdf.

Oregon still fixing state employee payroll system after problems last year

The finding is contained within the Secretary of State’s statewide single audit, released the week of Monday, June 10, that looks at a variety of state government agencies and programs. The Oregon Department of Administrative Services implemented the payroll system, called...
History Connection: Pat’s passions — education, history, fast cars
Pat Baars (1935-2022) is the woman who brought Barry and Bill Baars into the world. You may remember Bill — with the laughing face — as the previous director of Lake Oswego Public Library until he retired in 2018 (where is he now?). She may not be not as well-known around town as Bill, but in the field of education Pat Baars stood out. Pat taught history at Marshall High School for almost 30 years. One of her students, Mark Dustan — class of 69...
Movie Review: Disney serves up another ‘Frozen’ treat
If anything was a sure bet at the box office at the time, it was “Frozen II.” The original, animated 2013 movie was that sort of serendipity any studio wishes for ... even Disney, which doesn’t always have its expectations met. The company wanted to make sure its best foot was put forward on a “Frozen” sequel, which is why it took six years. Freeform shows “Frozen II” Saturday, June 22, right after — appropriately enough — the first “Frozen.” ...

Lake Oswego resident and longtime blood donor nears big milestone

Over 50 years later, Brunner is still donating and in July she will pass the milestone of 25 gallons provided to the American Red Cross. She has donated blood a few times a year every year since she started. “It was really good to know you’re helping someone. It makes you feel good,” she...
More Oregon leaders react to U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion medicine
Oregon political leaders continued to react Friday, June 14, after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld access to mifepristone, a widely available abortion drug, earlier in the week. The decision written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh carefully sidestepped the issue of future court challenges to the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone. The decision, released Thursday, only rules that the plaintiffs in this case — anti-abortion doctors — don’t have standing to sue because they do not prescribe the drug themselves. ...
