ITV v. Post Office Ltd.: British series follows groundbreaking ‘Mr. Bates’ case
Television is much more than just a means for entertainment these days. In fact, ever since television sets replaced radio as the dominant broadcast medium in the mid-1950s, television writers have sought ways to incorporate realism and resonance into their art. Sure, some shows prefer to lean more into escapist elements, but many seek to connect with their audience by way of truth and representation instead. The few shows that can do both often see the results come awards season. One show making waves this...

New heat maps show how rising temperatures will hit different Portland-area communities
A new heat mapping project from Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties found a significant disparity in the temperatures experienced in different parts of the region. Canby and Molalla had the highest temperatures among Clackamas County cities. Canby also ranked among the lowest for tree canopy and highest for impervious land. Just 17% of the city is shielded by tree canopy, which lowers temperatures through shade and evapotranspiration. More than half of the land in Canby and Molalla is impervious, which often leads to higher temperatures. ...

Jottings From Fifth & G: What’s on our minds?
I’ve found myself preoccupied lately with the discourse around one issue, among many, in the upcoming election: migration. While I don’t intend this to be a political polemic or recommendation for whom to vote, I want to share a story that may be of interest to all and is, if nothing else, heartrending. Last year, a young woman from El Salvador, whose name we’ll call Juanita, was traveling with her young 4-year-old daughter on a train — which migrants call “the Beast,” in Spanish “la...

OPINION: Grapevines or powerlines?
It may have started with A.R. Shipley, over a hundred fifty years ago. That Stafford area was a great place that forty varieties of grapes could grow. Concords were the best he felt, for juice, jams and jelly oh so fine: But never imagined a good place for growing grapes for making wine. I-205 and affordable housing pressure, issues flooding land speculators cup. Resident concerns about PGE ability on how to safely power the region up. Vineyards, farms, active-agriculture, what our Stafford character is about....

3 tips for first-time home buyers
Real estate has garnered considerable attention since 2020, and for good reason. Though speculators and real estate professionals may point to several variables that have affected the home market in recent years, the pandemic certainly was among those factors. Real estate prices and mortgage interest rates increased significantly during the pandemic and have remained well above pre-pandemic levels. The spike in home prices and interest rates has significantly impacted young...
