2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness is built for the Pacific Northwest
When I was living in Southern Oregon many years ago, one my earliest vehicles was a used Subaru GL 4WD Wagon, the first mass produced economy vehicle available with four-wheel-drive. It was small, crude, and barely able reach freeway speeds because its 67-horsepower engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission with low gearing to take maximum advantage of the limited power. But it could climb dirt trails on the surrounding hills like a mountain goat and handle the occasional snow like a much larger and more expensive Jeep. ...

2024 Kia Seltos is the right-sized SUV
Most of the times I climb into the driver's seat of a new SUV, I'm impressed by how large it is. At six feet tall I'm actually climbing in, for one thing. Then even the midsize SUVs seem to get bigger every year. That's what makes a week in the Kia Seltos a welcome break. The Seltos is larger than Kia's smallest SUVs like the Soul and Niro, but still smaller than the current Sportage and the rest of Kia's SUV models. The Seltos occupies...

Before plans can be made regarding new capital bond construction in the Lake Oswego School District, the district’s long-range facilities plan committee has to weigh a potential partnership with the city of Lake Oswego. On Feb. 7, Lake Oswego City Manager Martha Bennett sent a memo to LOSD Superintendent Jennifer Schiele expressing interest in the 9.4-acre property along Boones Ferry Road — specifically, a school district and city partnership to use part of the land for a new library or community center. ...

Movie Review: Melissa McCarthy is ‘The Boss’ as star and co-writer
Who’s “The Boss?” Well, in movie terms in 2016, the answer to that was fairly easy: Melissa McCarthy. The “Mike & Molly” and “Gilmore Girls” alum’s film career has been an ever-fluctuating series of hits and misses ever since she struck the bullseye with her marvelously bawdy, Oscar-nominated work in “Bridesmaids,” but it’s a thrill to see her still riding reasonably high ... especially, in some cases, with projects she generates for herself. ...

Kotek: No tolling now, but maybe tolling later
Gov. Tina Kotek says her pause on tolling now for Portland metro area freeways should not be read as no tolling ever for Oregon highways and bridges. But Kotek halted the current toll-making process set in motion by 2017 legislation, which left it to the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon Transportation Commission to figure out how to reduce metro traffic congestion and raise money for new projects. She had already paused its implementation until Jan. 1, 2026. ...
Lake Oswego leaders happy with governor’s tolling decision
The city of Lake Oswego and its leaders had vociferously criticized the state of Oregon’s plan to toll I-5 and I-205 as a way to fund infrastructure projects from the get-go. Their efforts — along with the many others who opposed tolling — may have been vindicated this week when Gov. Tina Kotek decided to halt the Regional Mobility Pricing Project and asked the Legislature to decide how to address the transportation infrastructure funding shortfall. ...
