Opinion: Let's think outside the box for Clackamas County veterans' resiliency
On Feb. 16, I found someone who can be healing balm for our strife-sickened society. On this day, East Carolina University baseball player Parker Byrd became the first collegiate baseball player to take an at-bat on a prosthetic limb. He lost a leg in boating accident. He almost died. His doctors said he had a 1% chance to live. He made it. He's a survivor. When he bore his weight on that prosthetic limb, he bore the weight of so many wounded troops. He had...
Real issues, fictional ‘Regime’: Winslet, Grant star in new political drama
Flip through the pages of your local newspaper or turn the television to your preferred news network and you’ll see it: a plethora of stories chronicling the ins and outs of national politics. Often times, the politics are related to your own nation, but in order to understand one’s own country’s goals, desires and needs, the news must also look abroad. While these news updates and articles center exclusively on real-world issues in a 24-hour news cycle context, one HBO series is going above and beyond to bring real concerns into a scripted environment. ...
Movie Review: A ‘Magnificent’ redo that wasn’t really needed
The original 1960 Western — inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese classic “Seven Samurai” — still holds up beautifully, but after three sequels and a TV series that was a modest success for CBS over a couple of seasons, it’s not hard to understand why a studio would return to one of its most famous properties. BBC America shows the most recent version Sunday, March 3. The story basically stays the same: A town is besieged by a villain (portrayed in this case by Peter Sarsgaard,...

“Apples Never Fall” (Peacock — Mar. 14, Limited Series Premiere) Based on Liane Moriarty’s New York Times bestselling novel, this series centers on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. Former tennis coaches Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening) are ready to start their golden years, while they look forward to spending time with their four adult children (Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles). But, everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing....

Oregon lawmakers advance housing, addiction bills
Oregon lawmakers took big steps Thursday, Feb. 29, toward final approval of bills advancing the session’s major priorities of housing production and addiction treatment. The House passed legislation that reimposes criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of specified drugs, partly reversing a ballot measure that voters approved in 2020 to remove penalties. But the same bill also eases barriers to insurance coverage for treatment, services for more than 1 million low-income recipients under the Oregon Health Plan, and medication-assisted treatment in jails. ...
Lake Oswego senator working to pass bill to create task force on suicide prevention and firearms
A bill proposed by Oregon Senate President. Rob Wagner, D-Lake Oswego, to establish a task force to find solutions to gun violence and suicide is slowing moving through the legislative process. The bill would create a 17-member task force with legislators as well as professionals in fields like behavioral health, youth psychology, law enforcement and veteran support, and would outline recommendations for things like: “How to better support youth experiencing suicidal ideation,” “How to reduce stigma on suicidal ideation” and ideas for improved community safety...
Fall Out Boy brings the heat in first show of 'So Much for (2our) Dust' at the Moda Center
In the principal show of Fall Out Boy’s latest tour run, “So Much for (2our) Dust”, the boys brought the heat — literally. A mix of hits from across their discography, featuring songs for the veteran "Folie à Deux" fan and late-album listeners, a quick magic act and a 20-foot puppet left little to be desired. The long-running group performed the first run of their second “So Much (for) Stardust" album tour on Feb. 28 at the Moda Center in Portland. ...
Over the Fence: Guarding the family tree
There’s a reason why family trees have that particular moniker. To begin with, trees have branches, obviously, just as families do. These branches don’t always grow strong and straight. Sometimes, they fail to grow properly at all. Sometimes, the fruit they bear never makes it to harvest. The tree may often be buffeted and battered by the harsh winds of death and disease. Considering that truth reminds me of my mother’s grandmother and namesake, Cora Drusilla Smith. Cora died of meningitis when she was 26...

Jottings From Fifth & G: Memories from the past
Several years ago, I went to an Estate Sale in Northeast Portland. There were two shoe boxes on a high shelf in a walk-in closet. Upon opening the boxes, I learned they held letters written in 1942 and beyond. Realizing that I held first person history from WWII, I asked the estate sale staff how much they’d cost. We finally agreed on $5 for each box. The boxes were relocated to shelves in my closet where they remained undisturbed for several years. After I retired...

As previously reported, the county Democrats decided against an early endorsement for Wentworth, who is running unopposed for reelection, after a member of the party brought up the DA’s handling of the case against former West Linn doctor David Farley. ...
