In 54 days, Kalen DeBoer will usher in a new era of Alabama Crimson Tide football, replacing the legendary Nick Saban as head coach in Tuscaloosa. Coach DeBoer and the Crimson Tide will take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Aug. 31 to kick off the 2024 college football season inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Russ Chappell, Tuscaloosa Radio Host and Ad Man, Passes Away
Alabama broadcaster and advertising executive Oren “Russ” Russell Chappell, Sr. passed away on July 1 at the age of 87. Chappell graduated from the University of Alabama in 1958 with a degree in broadcasting, going on to work as an on-air personality at WTBC and WJRD in Tuscaloosa during the 1960s.

Hoover Met Complex cancels summer pickleball tournament
The Hoover Metropolitan Complex has canceled its summer indoor pickleball tournament due to low participation, General Manager Shannon Ealy said. The tournament had been scheduled for July 27-28 at the Finley Center, but as of last week, there were only a little more than 50 registered, Ealy said. The Finley Center’s spring tournament in March had more than 200 people registered, he said.
