Placer County Historical Society's new Rich Flat plaque rocks
“You need a rock.” Those were the words of Patrick Ferreira, owner of Robinson Sand & Gravel. The Placer County Historical Society had just received the plaque for Rich Flat, and the Native Sons of the Golden West #59 agreed to help install it. Ferreira looked at the skinny metal pole that came with the plaque and determined it just wouldn’t do the job, hence the need for a rock.
PG&E launches major undergrounding project in Foresthill amid fire safety concerns
FORESTHILL -- Questions were answered Tuesday night for residents in the Placer County community of Foresthill as Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) kicked off a massive power lines undergrounding project.PG&E held a community meeting Tuesday to answer questions from neighbors. The plan is to put more than 40 miles of power lines underground in the Foresthill area. It is part of a much larger project to put more than 10,000 miles of power lines underground in high-fire-risk areas across the state. It comes as PG&E faces several lawsuits and investigations over allegations a transmission line started the Mosquito Fire that forced 11,000 people from their homes.PG&E said the project will take about four years and construction has already started. However, a limited budget for the project means not everyone in Foresthill will have their neighborhood lines underground."There's essentially a scale for rating wildfire risk and they drew the line on a particular place on that scale," PG&E spokesman Paul Moreno said. The neighborhood that will not get its lines underground could be a part of a future project after the completion of the current project.
How Taking a Wilderness First Responder Course Made Me a More Valuable Ski Partner
On New Year’s Eve last season, I watched my uncle break his femur right in front of me on Alta’s High Rustler, a steep, double-black diamond slope not very far from the base of the Utah ski area. I’m glad it was only a femur because when I saw him slam on the cat track in front of me after helplessly watching him violently tumble 1,000 feet at a not-ok speed, I thought I had literally watched his head explode before my very eyes. I stared, mouth agape, as his limp body rag-dolled a few more yards past the cat track before I unfroze and skied over to him, not knowing if he was still alive.

Laura McFarlane Donohoo and Mary Jo Alari Help Thrift Shoppe Thrive
Lucy Kelley, born June 28, 1897, described her drive for accomplishing things: “I just get the ball rolling.” One of the balls still rolling after Lucy’s death is the Mountain Thrift Shoppe in Blue Jay, although it was located at Highway 189 and Grass Valley when it was established in the late 1980’s. The Mountain Thrift Shoppe (originally christened as just “The Thrift Shoppe”) is thriving in its current location in Blue Jay. A traffic signal Lucy had promoted for four years at Daley Canyon and Highway 18, approved for 1990, seems to have fallen by the wayside.

LIFE CHANGER
The Western States Endurance Run isn't so much a race as it is torture, spooled out slowly and sadistically over 100 miles. It's a test of willpower, fortitude and pain tolerance more than a measure of stamina, speed or athletic talent. It is also, one might add, a test of...

As a health-oriented initiative, active living and the ability to move naturally are core tenets for Blue Zones Project Yuba-Sutter. In order to address pedestrian safety and improve built environments in the Yuba-Sutter community, Blue Zones and other community leaders took part in the Safe Streets and Vision Zero Leadership Seminar on June 27 to discuss possible traffic calming measures and enhanced accessibility for area roadways.
