8:30 a.m. UPDATE: Thompson Fire 46% contained; five zones still under evacuation order
OROVILLE — Firefighters are getting a handle on the Thompson Fire that has burned 3,789 acres north of Oroville. As of Friday morning, the blaze has reached 46% containment any many who were evacuated have been able to return home as orders have reverted back to warnings. However, there are still five zones under an evacuation order.

With California sweltering under a week-long heat wave, firefighters on Wednesday battled the most dramatic and potentially dangerous fire of the year so far, as flames from the Thompson Fire spread around Oroville Dam, the tallest dam in the United States, even at one point burning on the dam itself.

The mandatory evacuation area for the Thompson Fire, near Lake Oroville, was greatly reduced on Thursday. Except for zones within the perimeter of the fire, evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings. About 10 square miles on the lake’s west shore remained under the order, down from almost 50 square miles shortly after the fire started on Tuesday.
