(AP) — Thousands of people evacuated during a Northern California wildfire were allowed to return home Thursday afternoon as crews continued battling flames amid scorching heat, officials said. Containment of the Thompson Fire near the city of Oroville in Butte County also increased to 29% from 7%.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — Thousands are under evacuation warnings and orders Thursday as the Thompson Fire continues burning in Butte County near Oroville. Cal Fire said the blaze is at 3,789 acres and 29% containment Thursday morning. The fire sparked in the area of Cherokee and Thompson Flat Cemetery roads near Oroville Tuesday morning. Fire officials said there's a threat to multiple infrastructures, including power and water supply to the Oroville area.

Update July 4 at 12:30 p.m. Cal Fire is continuing to make progress on the Thompson Fire amid a triple-digit heat wave. Rick Carhart, public information officer for the Butte County Fire Department, told NSPR the number of acres burned did not change overnight.
