Auburn's Echo Valley Ranch readies for another Tevis Cup ride
The 68th Tevis Cup is almost here. Next Saturday, July 20, riders leave Robie Park at 5:15 a.m. and must be across the finish line in Auburn by 5:15 a.m. Sunday, July 21. Echo Valley Ranch, Inc. has been providing feed and support for more than 30 years to Tevis Cup riders, who are arriving in Auburn for the annual 100 Miles One Day event along the Western States Trail. That equates to 1,500 bales of hay (75 tons) over the years.
Public energy option may come to Oroville
OROVILLE — A public energy option alternative to PG&E may be rebooting in Oroville. At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Oroville City Council will consider submitting a letter of interest to join a community choice aggregation program called Pioneer Community Energy in order to bring a public option for electricity in the city.
Miner’s Picnic Annual Park Event on Aug. 24

Big rig overturns on Rattlesnake Bar Road
It was "all hands on deck" as first responders worked to free a driver from the wreckage of his big rig after it rolled down an embankment on Rattlesnake Bar Road on July 10. The El Dorado County Fire Protection District, Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit, Georgetown Fire Department and California Highway Patrol worked together for about 40 minutes to extricate the man after responding to the 8:30 a.m. accident. Once freed, the driver was taken to a waiting Calstar helicopter, which flew him to a Sacramento trauma center, according to an EDCFPC social media post.

FCCLA, or the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, is a 79-year-old national Career and Technical Student Organization for students, enrolled in Family and Consumer Science classes, that promotes leadership development, career preparation and community involvement.

The Vallejo Seaweed scored six runs in the first inning and eight more in the last three innings Monday at Wilson Park to defeat Marysville 14-6. Christian Zellner was the winning pitcher for Vallejo despite giving up 13 hits in eight innings of work. He gave up two earned runs and struck out five while walking one.

The latest article in The Union entitled: “Lawsuit challenging Measure B sales tax in Grass Valley to be dismissed” includes statements that are simply untrue. Patti Ingram-Spencer and her attorney Barry Pruett dropped her lawsuit because they did not believe they could win. Mr. Pruett blames the County for this. But he lost the lawsuit because it didn’t hold water.
E-bikes on Pines to Mines trail considered hazardous by some
The Pines to Mines trail (P2M) is envisioned to be a multi-use native surface trail system connecting Truckee to Nevada City sometime in the future. Approximately 50 miles of trail already exists and the implementation of a plan for the additional 22 miles connecting the far ends of the trails in place is expected to be underway some time this summer, according to the United States Forest Service (USFS).

In this photo from the July 15, 1954, edition of the Auburn Journal, an inside photo of the new aviary built recently on the 20th District Agricultural Fairgrounds in Auburn shows a portion of the 225 birds making their new home there. Included are parakeets, valley quail, imported Australian quail, finches and several species from South America and Mexico, love birds, canaries and button-eyed doves from Australia. Other canaries and doves were to be added. The new building has four compartments for birds and a feed room. It was situated just southwest of the administration building.

Recreation Facilities Closed Following Thompson Fire. Several trails and recreation facilities remain closed within Lake Oroville’s State Recreation Area following the recent Thompson Fire. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) and the California Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks) continue to assess fire impacts to recreation facilities and long-term closures of some facilities are anticipated for repairs and hazard tree removal.

Looking Back, Loomis: 1948 - Placer Supervisors accept bid on new Memorial Hall
Memorial services were held for Loomis native Tom Minoru Tomita, 75. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Tom lived in Loomis all his life where he farmed for 50 years. Funeral services were held for Mary Foster, 92, a native of Auburn and a resident of Loomis for 66 years. A 1928 graduate of Placer High School, Mary was a rancher, housewife and mother.
