Ideas & Opinions — Tim Jensen: Our country is in great trouble
I was awed by the flawless summation by Mike Haplerin in his recent discourse and I thought it should be shared lest it did not catch the attention by those in my community who should poignantly peruse it. He wrote: “The public has been lied to by its government and its free press. Foreign nations, friends and foe, know that our president is mentally unfit for office, and that there is no one in charge in the White House. The very foundations of the American system have been replaced by sand and mist, leaving questions about, yes, re-election, but also fundamental doubts about our national security and our commander in chief. The media’s conspiracy of silence was intended to keep Donald Trump from returning to the White House for a second term. It is ironic that the deception and hypocrisy may be what in fact leads Trump straight back to the Oval Office.” My, my. It is worthy to note that Mr. Halperin has worked as a journalist for ABC, MSNBC and, aghast, Fox News (to all of you with TDS). Trump may have some very bad habits, but he and his MAGA supporters aren’t villainous treasonous people who maliciously distort the fabric of our government for their own purposes. Those who have bought the Democrats’ lies thus far would do well to show their disdain for the current regime in the White House and the Democratic Party.
Ideas & Opinions — Mary Wernette: America and the world deserve a contested Democratic convention
America and the world deserve a contested Democratic convention. That is what took place in Chicago from May 16-18, 1860. Among the four Republican candidates, emerged one of our county’s favorite Presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Mary Wernette, Nevada City.

100 Miles in a Day: The Western States in Photos
A few minutes after 4 a.m., I began power hiking up the Palisades Tahoe ski resort, following a glittering snake of headlamps in front of me. We were all heading to the same spot, the Escarpment, which sits on the top of the ridge and overlooks Olympic Valley. The climb to get there is stout: three miles and 2,500 vertical feet, but it would put me in the perfect position for sunrise photos as runners passed by.
