– Yuba-Sutter Marketplace has its annual Back-to-School Back to Giving Supply Drive where a variety of entities begin to collect donations for teachers and counselors to distribute to local students in need. Everyone who donates may enter the contest to win a $500 gift card to the Yuba-Sutter Marketplace retailer of their choice each time they donate. Supplies needed include large backpacks, No. 2 pencils, pencil pouches for binders, pink pearl erasers, double pocket insert dividers, 1-1 ½” white binders with see-through covers, Expo whiteboard markers, sharpies, highlighters, college-ruled notebooks, construction paper, calculators, mechanical pencils, hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes. Additional donation drop-off locations include: Yuba City Staples, Yuba-Sutter Marketplace Management Office, Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, Yuba City City Hall, Yuba City Senior Center, Gauche Aquatic Park, Yuba City Chamber of Commerce, NorCal Diesel, Results Radio and FreeTime Java in the Yuba-Sutter Marketplace food court. The drive runs through Aug. 9.

Terry McLaughlin’s recent column, DEI In Action, described Dr. Owen Anderson’s long and complicated lawsuit against Arizona State University for mandatory DEI. It reminded me of the preposterous lengths that some white men will take to hold onto their power and privilege. The DEI training at both my jobs (one at a University) was interesting and enlightening and I would never categorize it as divisive or racist, as he does. Rather it is a way to show respect and empathy while promoting human dignity for all.

In this photo from the July 5, 1956, edition of the Auburn Journal, a refreshing drink of milk is supplied to these members of the Placer Savings and Auburn 20-30 Boys League teams by Nathan Anderson of Anderson Brothers Dairy. The dairy started the practice of supplying each of the four teams with cold milk after each game of Saturday’s doubleheader in observance of June, which was dairy month. They will continue the practice through the Boys League season. The dairy is situated off the Grass Valley Highway, and a processing plant is located at Elder’s Corner.
