After five years of service, Lakeland's second-highest ranking administrator has announced her resignation.

Emily Colón, the city's assistant city manager, submitted her resignation to City Manager Shawn Sherrouse last week. Colón and her family will be relocating to Orlando.

"This is a bittersweet moment for my family and me. Lakeland will always have a special place in our hearts," she said in a prepared statement. "I am incredibly grateful to City Manager Shawn Sherrouse and former City Manager Tony Delgado for the opportunity to lead in this amazing City."

Colón was hired by Lakeland in April 2019 as an assistant city manager, previously having served as a program administrator in Pasco County. She served the city through the COVID-19 pandemic, helping lead the city's response. Colón was promoted to deputy city manager in June 2022.

"Emily [Colón]'s contributions to the City of Lakeland have been tremendous," Sherrouse said. "She is a skilled public administrator with a very personable communication style that has helped shape the way we interact with and serve our community. Her leadership has benefited the culture of our organization, and her positive influence will be long-lasting.”

Colón has pledged her support to help ensure a smooth transition at the city, according to City spokesman Kevin Cook.
