MARBLEHEAD ― Twin sisters at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church have led efforts to comb through the church's past 70 years of old cookbooks, thrown in 20 new recipes and generated the "All Things New" cookbook to raise funds for building repairs.

The church had 500 cookbooks printed and they have been selling fast for $20 each. The Marblehead women are proud of the newest book.

According to sisters Dawn Glovinsky Fahsholtz and Diane Glovinsky, the church members, who have Polish and Slovakian ancestry, have published three cookbooks since the 1950s. The first, which has no date on the book, was a product of the 1950s to 1960s.

The second was done in 1977 as a dedication cookbook for the construction of the "new" St. Mary's church., which is visible today near Marblehead Lighthouse. St. Mary Marblehead is located at 505 E. Main St.

"There was one done in 1997. That was the centennial edition," Glovinsky said. It was compiled and issued for the church's 100th anniversary.

Glovinsky said it made sense now to create a new book. "It had been several decades since the last cookbook had been published."

"We selected recipes from the three cookbooks and in addition we added," she said about the book released this spring. "We have a total of 300 recipes in the cookbook. Most are from the old cookbooks.

"We added about 20 new ones."

The sisters said the church had conducted a survey of who would want a new book. They suspected it would be popular as they had had repeated requests for reprinting the old books.

Recipes reflect 'gems' from ethnic background

They identified some recipes from the old books to be "gems, tried and true."

"We have a lot of ethnic recipes in there," Glovinsky said.

The women said the supply is now limited and they sold many during a 10-day period set up at the social hall. Glovinsky said those still wanting a book can email her at glovinskydman@gmail.com .

When the 500 are gone, they sisters are not planning to order more as a reprint would be costly and take more time.

"Someone would have to take it over," said Glovinsky, who added it was a long process for the two 65-year-old sisters.

"We started in October, and we ordered it in mid-May." They are not ready to tackle that project again.

This special edition cookbook also is a tribute to the St. Mary Ladies’ Aid Society and to all the women who continue to support the parish. And the women's mother was a longtime Ladies’ Aid Society member and consultant on the project. The sisters said their mother died during the time they were compiling the book.

The sisters believe the book is popular, because it brings forward many of the community's long-time ethnic recipes.

"We have pierogi. We have halupki (cabbage rolls); there's halusky (dumplings). There is nut poppy seed bread," Glovinsky said. "There's a paska (Easter bread)."

The sisters have been members of St. Mary's all their lives. The church has about 50 families in the congregation.

The Rev. Joseph Repko, pastor of St. Mary Marblehead, noted that the entire purchase price will benefit the church’s building fund for roof replacement.

The books sold will raise funds to replace the roof for the rectory, the church and social hall.

The Rev. David Hannes (retired), the women's cousin, explained in a news release that the title is a reflection of Scripture when Jesus said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

“We thank our local communities for their overwhelming support of this church fundraiser,” Glovinsky said.
