    Wrestling: Cougars place 4th in South St. Paul

    North’s Menard wins at 215 in Orono

    Lakeville South placed fourth of 17 teams in the Veldman Invitational wrestling tournament Jan. 27 at South St. Paul High School.

    Riley Clark (145 pounds) and Bo Bokman (172) won their weight classes. Also placing were senior captain Leo English (second at 127), Viktor Morales (eighth at 152), Greg Aryeetey (fifth at 160), Trevor Lebaron (fifth at 172), Tre Owens (sixth at 189) and captain Josh Bergan (third at 215).

    Lakeville South will wrestle in an individual tournament in Pine Island on Saturday, Feb. 3.

    Lakeville North was sixth of 16 teams in the Orono Invitational on Jan. 27, led by senior captain Antonio Menard’s first place in the 215-pound weight class. Also placing for the Panthers were Hayden Roy (third at 114), captain Tristan Tieu (fifth at 121), Tyler Ruff (fourth at 160), captain Blake Krause (fifth at 189) and Michael Anderson (sixth at 285).

    Two Lakeville North newcomers, Esperanza Enriquez-Cavazo and Paityn Johnson, placed first in the girls division.

    The Panthers will face Faribault and Austin on Thursday in Faribault.

    Ninth-grade state qualifier

    Last weekend wrestlers from Lakeville North and Lakeville South competed in an individual qualifier in Farmington for the ninth-grade state championships. The top two finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament Saturday, Feb. 3, at Champlin Park High School

    Ninth-grade state qualifiers from Lakeville South are Max Stewart, who placed first in the qualifier at 127; Noah Anderson, first at 133; Brandon Kelvie, first at 145; and Wyatt Bonnerup, first at 189.

    Also placing at the qualifier were Collin Phan of South (fifth at 100), Max Flen of South (fifth at 107), Justin Dukes of South (sixth at 107), Noah Schoenbauer of Lakeville North (fourth at 121), Brody Goehtz of South (sixth at 121), Maddox Johnson of North (fifth at 127), Everett Guennigsma of South (third at 139), Gavin Casey of North (third at 152), Talon Crowley of South (fifth at 152), Eli Tuchscherer of North (fourth at 189) and Owen Henderson of North (fourth at 285).
