Today in Texas History: First Election Held in Texas
Over 100 years before Texas won its independence from Mexico, the first election on Texas soil was held in present-day San Antonio for “alcaldes” or justices of the peace. In the early 1700s, the Spanish crown controlled Texas. Spanish Franciscan missionary Antonio de Olivares arrived with Indian converts and established the Mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718. This is the mission that has come to be known as “The Alamo.”
