(LAMAR, Colo.) — As our ‘We Are Southeast Colorado’ week continues, our next stop was in Lamar at the Big Timbers Museum, which sits along the Santa Fe Trail and is the home for the past, present, and future of Prowers County.

The Big Timbers Museum is found in the transportation center of the U.S. and the building itself is historic as it was built in 1929. The museum was first an AT&T telegraph booster station, which helped bring connectivity to the West. Then in 1964, the building was given to the Prowers County Historical Society so they could build a museum.

The historic building now houses the stories of pioneers, ranchers and farmers, Native Americans, gangsters and so much more.

The Big Timbers Museum provides educational and leisure opportunities for all ages, plus students and teachers are always free and admission for an entire family is just $5.

The museum is located at 7515 U.S. Hwy. 50, just one mile north of Lamar. Summer hours are listed as Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
