School Tools 2024 event nears end: Over $11,000 raised, more donations needed
We're now just days away from the end of our 2024 School Tools event and we want to make sure every child in Hawaii has what they need succeed in school. Over the weekend, Island News distributed hundreds of kits to keiki in need with our partner, Helping Hands Hawaii, at their Nimitz Highway warehouse.
“Lahaina Ondo” bon dance song honoring Lahaina community to be released
“Lahaina Ondo” is a new bon dance song that honors the Lahaina community by recalling fond summertime memories of everyday life in Lahaina. It is set to be released on all digital platforms Aug. 8 together with a music video. The song and dance will be presented to the Lahaina community and performed publicly for the first time at the special Aug. 10 Lahaina Bon Dance at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.
Maui Music & Food Fest to Feature Mick Fleetwood, Jimi Hendrix Bassist Billy Cox, Rolling Stones Touring Band, and More
Mick Fleetwood, one-time Jimi Hendrix bassist Billy Cox and members of The Rolling Stones’ touring band are among the many musicians set to perform at an upcoming festival on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The inaugural Maui Music & Food Experience will take place September 5-7. The event will help support those affected by the devastating fires that hit the town of Lahaina in August 2023. The fires destroyed a large part of the town and killed more than 100 people.

New tropical depression forms in the eastern pacific, will possibly become first hurricane of the season
HONOLULU (Island News) -- A low-pressure system off Mexico’s southwestern coast has recently become more organized and is now a tropical depression. The system is moving west-northwest at 12 knots and is expected to continue this path, with a slight westward turn possible due to a high-pressure area over the southwestern U.S. By the end of the forecast period, it might turn north if the high-pressure area weakens.
