Students can help ensure classroom success by eliminating distractions and more

LANCASTER − Succeeding in the classroom is not always easy for students as various challenges often present themselves. But there are ways students can overcome those challenges and reach their scholastic goals.

Fairfield Christian Academy marketing and communications director Heather Keener said students should first make sure they know what all their assignments are.

"Whatever your method is of making sure you know what your assignments are, your assignment book or your planner, make sure you have that with you at all of your classes," she said. "So that at the end of the day you can take an inventory of what it is you've got to do that night and make sure you get that done before dinner or before practice or before bed."

Keener said studying is a lot easier than it used to be because students now take notes and do more on school-issued electronic devices. Their textbooks are digital so they don't have to carry books home anymore.

"When you're studying you're practicing what you learned in class," Keener said. "The one good thing to remember when you're studying is to make a note of what you don't understand."

She said that often leads to the student asking questions in class the next day to clear up the issue.

Keener also spoke of the importance of time management.

"Time management is just going to be your own determination or priorities, honestly," she said. "Because you can get swallowed up in social media or just blindly entertaining yourself watching a video because you have free time."

In order to help students remain focused, FCA students are not allowed to use their cell phones in class.

"We're trying to teach them to not rely on having their phone really for entertainment purposes all day long," Keener said. "Because I think that's the main distraction that I think people struggle with even when they get out into the workforce. So we're trying to train them now not to need to be entertained all the time, but to try to be engaged with the teacher, with the class and their learning experience."
