Amherst, N.Y (WBEN) - A Lancaster man has been given five years probation after stealing $173,000 from his employer during a four-year period.

47-year-old George Bonnes was working in IT for an Amherst medical office between September of 2018 and September of 2022 when the theft happened.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Bonnes submitted fraudulent invoices to his employer for work that he never did. The scheme was discovered following an internal audit by the business.

Bonnes plead guilty to one felony count of second degree grand larceny. He's been ordered to pay back the full amount to his former employer as part of the plea.

The District Attorney's Office says they recommended jail time rather than probation for Bonnes.
