LANCASTER − The city fire department and three neighboring units responded to smoke coming from the Chase Bank building downtown at Broad and Chestnut streets around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Assistant City Fire Chief Slade Schultz said someone from the nearby Double Edge Brewing Company saw smoke coming from the roof.

"We arrived to find smoke throughout the building," he said. "We found the rooftop HVAC unit overheating and spreading smoke to the building. The unit was shut down and the building ventilated."

There were no reported injuries and Schultz said there had been problems with the HVAC unit and that it had been serviced earlier in the day.

The Eagle-Gazette once had its office in the building.

Former Eagle-Gazette reporter Logan Weaver was at Double Edge during the incident.

"That's when the firetrucks from Greenfield and Violet townships started flying by," he said. "Everyone at Double Edge then started watching the firefighters on the roof as they worked to address the cause of the smoke."

Along with the city, Greenfield and Violet township fire departments, the Pleasant Township Fire Department also assisted.
