LANDRUM—Landrum’s locals and visitors now have another exciting choice for lunch and dinner. 1878 Butcher’s Block, the newest eatery in town, has opened its doors at 227 East Rutherford Street.

The Butcher’s Block offers a variety of options, including salads, wraps, and sandwiches. Additionally, the establishment also features a beer and wine bar. As a unique offering, 1878 Butcher’s Block also offers local, fresh-cut meat for those looking to take it home and enjoy.

With a background as a restaurant owner and consultant, owner David Black has realized his dream of owning a butcher shop by establishing this new business. Blending the essence of a traditional butcher shop with the charm of a restaurant, it encompasses both indoor and outdoor bar areas, providing a welcoming ambiance for patrons.

According to Black, the decision to choose Landrum as the location for the 1878 Butcher’s Block stemmed from his and his family’s fondness for the area’s community events, such as the Halloween Stroll and the Christmas parade.

“Landrum is so cool,” says Black. “Small towns have such a different feel than the big cities, and I felt that the demographics and foot traffic made Landrum the perfect fit for us.”

The name “1878 Butcher’s Block” holds a special significance. It is derived from the building’s chimney, which bears the inscription “1878” and the original builder’s name. While the building underwent a complete renovation, some original features, including the chimney and certain joists, were preserved.

The 1878 Butcher’s Block menu features classic options such as Reubens, BLTs, pastrami, and turkey wraps. The establishment’s signature sandwiches carry unique names, including the Vito, a combination of roast beef with provolone on ciabatta and the Bronx Bomber, which comprises salami, capicola, ham, and mozzarella.

The bar menu at 1878 Butcher Block boasts an array of seafood options, featuring oysters and smoked salmon crostini. The restaurant also has a dedicated kid’s menu featuring turkey and cheese, ham and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches.

“We’re going to keep things new and rotate both menus for the deli and the bar,” Black adds. “We’re all about quality here, above all else. We are all about putting quality on the plate.”

The establishment’s operating hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Patrons can follow 1878 Butcher Block on social media for the latest updates on specials and menu items.
