LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Lansing Fire Department wants to make sure community members and visitors stay safe this 4th of July, especially when using fireworks.

6 News anchor Megan Viecelli talked with Captain Rahshemeer Neal about how to avoid fireworks accidents that could result in injuries or deaths.

The city of Lansing allows fireworks from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Saturday, June 29 through Thursday, July 4.

Only consumer and low-impact fireworks are legal. Consumer fireworks include bottle rockets, Roman candles, single-tube devices, firecrackers, and reloadable shells. Low-impact fireworks include sparklers, cones, sparkling wheel devices, and smoke devices.

It is illegal to use display or professional-grade fireworks – leave those to the pros. Professional-grade fireworks typically come in a plain cardboard box with a “1.3 G Fireworks” logo on the side.

Be courteous to your neighbors by only lighting off fireworks during the designated timeframes.

Soak down your fireworks with a bucket and hose after you use them and make sure to pick up your trash the next day. Do not put non-soaked fireworks in a trash bin or inside a structure.

Have a garden hose or water source nearby, as well as a first-aid kit, in case of emergencies.

Any violations could result in a $1,000 fine per infraction.
