LANSING, Mich. ( WLNS ) — Dashboard camera shows state police and deputies chase a stolen truck in Mid-Michigan on Tuesday, the suspect driver frequently in the wrong lanes, narrowly avoiding crashes and reaching speeds of 80 mph.
It was the third police chase of the day for the same suspect, authorities say — the first two were in Ingham County , but deputies twice gave up their pursuits because it was too dangerous. The third chase picked up in neighboring Livingston County after authorities say the suspect dumped the sedan he had been driving and forced a homeowner to hand over the keys of her white GMC pickup truck.
Video clips released by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department shows Michigan State Police troopers chasing the stop the 60-year-old Genesee County man in the stolen truck.
The driver’s side tires can be seen falling off the truck as it wove through traffic, damaged by spike strips that deputies had laid down. A deputy can be heard describing “heavy smoke” trailing the truck.
As the video continues, the truck drives in the lane for opposing traffic and the driver narrowly misses a head-on wreck with a semi-truck. The was pursued through a retail area and narrowly avoided side-swiping a second semi.
The video shows the truck driving in the far right lane of the road before the driver lost control and swerved across traffic, including in front of the patrol vehicle. The truck then smashed head-on into an SUV.
The video shows officers moving the people in the SUV to safety and then the arrest of the man.
The driver was hospitalized following the crash with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities in both Ingham and Livingston counties said they would be pursuing charges against him.
