LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – On holidays like the Fourth of July, experts say we need to keep those in mind who may not enjoy the noise and festivities, like veterans and seniors.

A representative from The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America tells 6 News these holiday traditions affect people with dementia differently than the rest of us

“Our hearing actually changes when we have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and we can hear a lot more sensitively,” said Leah Daly, education program manager for The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “So, those sounds that are already pretty loud to us can be really uncomfortably loud and startling for people with dementia.”

Daly says many people think about the fireworks, but not many consider how stressful large gatherings can be as well. Groups with lots of different faces, sounds, and conversations can be equally as overwhelming for those who struggle with the disease.

“Confusion can lead to people feeling overwhelmed or disoriented,” continued Daly. “If it goes far enough, people can start to be agitated or aggressive if they are starting to feel that feeling of overwhelm.”

To combat this, experts suggest preparing a quiet and calm space where people can get away from the action if they need to. You can consider adding activities, blankets, or stuffed animals that can bring a sense of comfort to your loved ones.
