LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Are you interested in setting the policies that govern the way local schools deliver education? You have until July 23, 2024, at 4 p.m. to file to run for your local school board and the Lansing Community College Board of Trustees. The deadline to withdraw from the race is July 26, 2024, at 4 p.m.

All the positions are non-partisan posts. Filing can be done either with petitions or by paying a $100 filing fee. A filing fee is non-refundable.

Candidates seeking to be elected to a school board that is in one city file their petitions or pay their filing fees with the city clerk. Candidates running for school board posts in districts with more than one municipality file their petitions with the clerk of the county.

Check with your local election official to determine which clerk to file for election is the right one for the position you are seeking.

In addition to filing for office either by petition or fee, a candidate is required to follow the Michigan Campaign Finance Act and to file an Affidavit of Identity.

The Michigan Association of School Boards reports there are over 4,000 elected K-12 school board officials in the state.

For more information on filing to run for office, or to find out more about what is required from an elected school board member or a community college trustee, check out the Candidate’s Guide to School Board Elections from the MASB.

To find out what school board or community college you may be eligible to represent, reach out to your county clerk. Here’s a listing and links to the county clerks in the 6 News viewing area:
