LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The organizers of an annual 5K run/walk are aiming to raise more than $120,000 in support of grieving children and teens in mid-Michigan.

Ele’s Race is happening on the campus of Jackson National Life Insurance Company this Saturday in Lansing. The opening ceremony is at 7:40 a.m., including a bubble release, and the race begins at 8 a.m.

The annual race began in 1994 as “Ellen’s Race,” in memory of Ellen Osborn. She was an East Lansing fourth-grader who had died the previous year.

Ele’s Place is a local healing center for grieving children and teens, founded in Lansing in 1991.

Organizers say that in Michigan, 1 in 11 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18.

“Events like Ele`s Race give the community an opportunity to honor those who have died and help ensure that we can continue to provide these crucial peer support services, 100% free of charge for as long as a family need them,” said Kristine Kuhnert, branch director of Ele’s Place Capital Region.
