Car break-in spree frustrates Eagle Township residents

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Residents of Capital Crossings in Eagle Township say multiple cars and sheds were broken into Sunday night, continuing into the early morning hours of Monday. Now, they’re trying to figure out what was taken and who is responsible.

Resident Rayna Bodman said her car, like many, was broken into. She woke up Monday morning to her things out of place and said this has been an issue since she began living in the neighborhood around a year and a half ago.

“My work bag had been placed on the back side of my trailer. And it just didn’t make sense to me cause my bag was left in my car. So as soon as I looked in my car I had my center console opened and I knew it had been through. I had a few debit cards taken, a few pictures taken,” Bodman said.

That was just the beginning of the issues, later in the day Bodman said she started getting alerts her card was being used in Lansing.

“It was used at a close-by Meijer and a Sunoco,” said Bodman. “So I immediately called the police back to make sure they were on it as fast as they could.”

Bodman said she was not the only one who was targeted, and now she and her neighbors, like Sue Ann Taylor, are doing what they can to prevent this from happening in the future.

“Yesterday by noon we had all of our cameras repositioned. And then we also added the light that glows on them to show we have them all on,” Taylor said.

Taylor said she moved to Capital Crossings to be in a quiet area. What happened Sunday night was quite the opposite.

“To then come out here in a small town where people don’t always lock their doors or lock their cars and watch a whole entire string of stuff happen. I mean we’ve had farmers call us wondering if their livestock will be safe,” Taylor said.

Taylor said she would not be surprised if Eagle Township was a target because of how quiet it usually is.

“To see a whole neighborhood get rocked like that is hard,” Taylor said. “2 cars were stolen from the property and more than 14 cars by 7 am were reported broken into. It’s a problem and it needs to be addressed.”

The management at Capital Crossings told 6 News they have no comment on the situation.

6 News reached out to the owners of Capital Crossing, Yes Communities, but did not hear back.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s office says they are aware of the situation but Michigan State Police are handling the investigation.

MSP did not get back with 6 News in time for the story.
