LANSING — Coming off a major shoulder surgery at the beginning of the season, senior Angelle Haan wasn't sure how much she would be able to contribute to Fowlerville's softball team this season.

On the big stage of Tuesday's Softball Classic quarterfinal against Waverly, Haan was a big contributor in Fowlerville's six-run fifth inning, as both her and sophomore McKayla Fletcher hit three-run homers to put Fowlerville on top.

Waverly responded to tie the game and send it to extra innings, and Haan found herself in another huge moment. With two outs and two runners on, Haan delivered another three-run shot over the right field wall to put Fowlerville up for good in a 12-8 victory at Ranney Park.

"I knew we had the talent to get it done in the end, but to be honest it was really hard on my stomach with nerves. But we all got hits and were able to get on base," Haan said. "It was definitely a memorable moment, coming back and winning like this, and it puts a lot of momentum into our season."

Haan finished with seven RBIs, also driving in a run on a single in the first inning. Fowlerville took the lead in the eighth originally on a sacrifice fly before Haan added three massive insurance runs.

Senior pitcher Tori Briggs, a Central Michigan commit, shut the door in the eighth inning to close it out, moving Fowlerville into Wednesday's Classic semifinals.

"We worked hard to get in big games and do it consistently and being able to compete with Waverly and come out on top is really good," Fowlerville coach Bradley Ryan said. "The kids are getting more comfortable with their games and we lean on (Briggs) hard and she performs."

Comets take flight late in comeback win

Game two of Tuesday's doubleheader saw another close contest and late rally that ultimately lifted Grand Ledge to a 7-5 win over Williamston, securing the Comets' spot in Wednesday's semifinals.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Grand Ledge was able to get three runs back to cut the deficit to just one. Then, trailing by two in the sixth, the Comets were able to put four more on the board as sophomore outfielder Isabella Perez plated the game-tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run double.

Sophomore pitcher Tomia Geter then was able to shut down Williamston's bats for the final two innings.

"I told them from the get-go that we just needed to keep it simple and keep the energy high and I think they did a good job with that all game," Grand Ledge coach Allison Miller said. "(Perez) was able to get that hit and rally us and we came out ahead. It's a huge win and it'll be a really good start for us going into the rest of the season."

Fowlerville and Grand Ledge will meet Wednesday in the Softball Classic semifinals at Ranney Park in Lansing.
