Possible severe Lansing area thunderstorms Friday afternoon will kick off wet weekend

GRAND RAPIDS — The weekend will start off cloudy and rainy for much of mid-Michigan, but should dry out by the end of Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

Rain and storms moved through the state late Thursday into early Friday, and the National Weather Service Grand Rapids office said expect more of the same, with rain and storms moving back into the state Friday afternoon and overnight into Saturday.

"Occasional rain and thunderstorms today," the weather service said on X. "Some storms could have gusty winds and heavy rain."

Temperatures should be in the mid-70s to 80 degrees the NWS said.

Showers and storms will be most likely Friday afternoon and evening, the NWS said, and storms may be strong to severe.

"A couple rounds of storms are possible Friday," the weather service said. "The first prior to daybreak and the second late in the afternoon to early overnight. Localized flooding will also be possible in areas of repeated heavy rainfall."

Most of the Lower Peninsula is under a marginal thunderstorm risk today, which means storms will be limited in duration, coverage or intensity. Wind and hail are the main potential risks.

Scattered showers and storms are expected to continue into the weekend. There could be a few isolated showers/storms possible Sunday afternoon, the weather service said.

"There are chances for thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, best chances during the afternoon and evenings. No severe weather is expected at this time," the NWS said.

Saturday, highs could reach 79 with lows in the mid-60s. Sunday, highs will reach only to about 76 with lows falling to 61 to 65.
