AURELIUS TWP. — A family-run market and hardware store near Mason has applied for a liquor license to serve alcohol on the premises.

After a public hearing on Tuesday, the Aurelius Township Board of Trustees voted to allow Darrell's Market & Hardware to apply for one of two Class C liquor licenses available within the municipality.

It's the first step in securing permission to create a space within the store, at 4520 W. Columbia Road, where customers can consume beer, wine, spirits and mixed drinks, said Jamie Robinson, the store's owner. The business will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year, she said.

Robinson said she's already applied to the state's Liquor Control Commission for the license.

"I don't know what it's going to look like," she said. "There was no way I was going to hire an architect or my staff would put any more time into it if we were not allowed to proceed. I'm not going to spend any money until we get the license so that's my next step."

It is unclear how long it could take before the Michigan LCC considers the application.
