LANSING — Michigan State Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect who posed as a federal employee in a scam that cost a woman "a large amount of money."

The woman received a call in August from someone claiming to be from the Federal Trade Commission. The caller told the woman she had been the victim of fraud, but that the FTC would be able to recover their money, the MSP said in a post on X.

The caller told the woman she would have to post a "protection fee" that later would be refunded to the victim, the post said.

She made the complaint to Lansing area state troopers.

The suspect, an unidentified man, met the victim, the MSP said. The woman took a photo of him.

Police did not say how much money the victim gave the suspect.

"If you can identify this subject or have any information related to the case, you can call the Lansing Post at 517-322-1907," the post said.
