Many would love to live in a two-story house. But at the Sandford House, there are some rumored to have devoted their afterlives to haunting the place. Where Halliday St. ends on Dick St. in Fayetteville, North Carolina, there sits the historical landmark. Visit it during the day, and you can’t help but marvel at its beauty. At night, however, both the mood and the ambiance change. The landmark is rich in history as well as mystery.

The Sandford family included John, Margarette, and their seven children, who moved into the house in 1832. Local legend says the house was once a barracks for Union soldiers in 1865. But what stands out to those who turn pale when visiting the premises is finding the lady in black. Dressing in all black as a woman during this period was meant to represent a time of mourning. The mysterious lady is believed to be Margerette, searching the halls, stairs, and rooms for her deceased husband, while others have a different theory.

Legend says that a Confederate soldier was stationed at the house along with his fellow troops before the arrival of the Union Army. His girlfriend had stayed by his side at the time. When word got back to the location of who was arriving at their doorstep, the young couple attempted to flee using a tunnel, but they met their demise when the union army completely decimated it with explosives. The remains of the couple were never recovered from the site.

Some say her body was buried somewhere in the tunnels - pointing to that as the reason the spirit is restless and searching for her lover everywhere in the house, including the secret tunnel. Reports say that when the lady is near, she gives off feelings of gentleness and sadness. She is known to touch people’s shoulders from behind to get their attention, revealing their faces.

Do you have what it takes to walk these same rooms? The same stairs and halls? Could you handle walking through the dark tunnel alone?
